Ortiz naci\u00f3 en Wichita. Sus padres migraron a los Estados Unidos y se establecieron en Wichita al poco de concluir la Revoluci\u00f3n mexicana. A Ortiz le encantaba ir a la escuela, aunque sab\u00eda poco ingl\u00e9s por entonces. Dej\u00f3 la escuela con 13 a\u00f1os, despu\u00e9s de que uno de sus maestros se burlara de \u00e9l.
